Lockdown Still Lifes – telling a story of resilience and creativity, of seeing the beauty around us, seen through the eyes of a global group of visual story tellers ranging from carpenters, lecturers, socialists, activists, musicians, marketeers, graphic designers, amateurs, novice to experienced artists.
Lockdown Still Lifes is a Facebook community born as an immediate response to UK Lockdown in March 2020. Members are invited to post images of their surroundings that inspire them. It provided a visual insight into lockdown life during this unique time of social distancing and isolation. We found that expressing themselves through everyday objects people access a new and different narrative.
Since then the group has evolved to host weekly zoom events ranging from artist talks to democratically and radically sharing thoughts on themes ranging from origins, dreams, obstacles to senses. As one member put it “The weekly meetings have provided a near ‘confessional’ arena in which participants often bravely shared the underlying circumstances and traumas that make them who they are today. It is a product of the Lockdown condition, which has inevitably provoked an outpouring of humanity. It needs to be shared and celebrated.”
To share what is intimate and immediate with what is abstract and remote and be reminded again of our shared need for beauty, our shared need for humanity and creativity.
This simple activity has resonated with a wide range of people from different backgrounds. The group has grown rapidly and now has over 460 members from across the UK and abroad.
